The film, directed by Kabir Khan, is based on team India's triumph at the 1983 Cricket World Cup.

Kabir Khan’s 83 created a buzz right when it was announced last year, partly because the film is based on India’s 1983 Cricket World Cup win and partly because the role of the winning captain, Kapil Dev, is to be essayed by none other than Ranveer Singh.
Now, the makers have announced the film's release date — 30 August 2019.
Reliance Entertainment, co-producer of the film, made an announcement on its official Twitter handle: “Mark your calendar! ‘83 will be releasing on August 30, 2019. ‘83 stars @RanveerOfficial. Directed by @kabirkhankk. @FuhSePhantom @83_thefilm.”

Phantom Films, largely helmed by filmmaker Anurag Kashyap, has also come on board as a producer.
This is Phantom Films' second collaboration with Ranveer Singh, first being Lootera (2013). The actor is currently riding high on the success of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmaavat. His portrayal of Delhi sulatan Alauddin Khilji is receiving wide critical acclaim.
Recently during a group interview, Singh had shared his thoughts on playing Kapil Dev. "To play Kapil Dev in his biopic would be my greatest challenge. I find myself honoured and privileged to be chosen to tell this story on celluloid," he said.
Rest of the cast for 83 is not revealed yet. As the film is based on the Indian cricket team during the 1980s, it will be interesting to see the casting for rest of the cricketers.
Kabir Khan last directed Tubelight (2017), which didn’t do well at the box office.
