Twitter reels as news of Sridevi's shock demise hits the Indian film industry


The actress, 54, died late on Saturday in Dubai after suffering a heart attack.

The Hindi and Southern film industries woke up on Sunday to the shocking news of actress Sridevi's death.

Sridevi, 54, died late on Saturday night of a heart attack in Dubai where the family, bar older daughter Jahnvi Kapoor, had gone to attend the wedding of her nephew, Mohit Marwah. After the wedding, Sridevi and younger daughter Khushi had stayed on in the Gulf emirate.

Artistes, filmmakers and musicians were soon mourning the loss of Sridevi on the microblogging site Twitter.

Priyanka Chopra was among the earliest to tweet about the sudden death of the actress. The Quantico actress seemed lost for words, an emotion several in the industry identified with.

Even the current generation of artistes was unable to digest the news. 

A veteran of Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, and Malayalam cinema, Sridevi was known for her ability to blend natural charm with unique expressions. She remains one of the most powerful female stars to bridge the Northern and Southern film industries with ease.

Having taken a break from films in 1995 to beget and raise her children, Sridevi returned to cinema with Gauri Shinde's English Vinglish in 2012. 

Even politician Milind Deora joined his friends from the industry in mourning the loss. 

Actor Farhan Akhtar reminisced about his first job in the industry, in a Sridevi film, Lamhe (1992). The actress had won the Filmfare award for Best Actress for her performance in the Yash Chopra film. 

Rishi Kapoor, who co-starred with Sridevi in some iconic films like Nagina (1986) and Chandni (1989), was also shocked by the sudden demise of the actress. 

Another former co-star, Amitabh Bachchan, remained uncharacteristically quiet on Twitter. A notorious insomniac, the actor did not tweet any news about her death but left a mysterious message for followers to analyse on their own. 

Sridevi is survived by her husband, Boney Kapoor, and daughters Jahnvi and Khushi Kapoor.
