The first day collections of director Luv Ranjan’s Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety have come as a pleasant surprise. The film, starring Kartik Aaryan, Nushrat Bharucha and Sunny Singh Nijjar, collected Rs6.25 to Rs6.50 crore on its opening day yesterday, as per figures shared by Boxofficeindia.com.
The film has performed the best in North Indian regions like Delhi, NCR and Punjab probably because of its subject.
The pre-release buzz around the film wasn’t much. The film has opened well despite little publicity.
The numbers of Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety remind us of last year’s surprise hit Fukrey Returns. The film, starring Varun Sharma, Richa Chadha and Pulkit Samrat, made just over Rs8 crore on the first day. The theme of Fukrey Returns is desi, while that of Sonu Ke... is in the urban zone.
Sonu Ke... is said to be made at a budget around Rs30-40 crore. So, it is vital for it to have a jump in the collections today and tomorrow. It is a normal trend for a film to take a jump on weekends and Sonu Ke... stands a good chance.
The other film, Welcome To New York, had a dismal performance at the box office. The film, directed by Chakri Toleti and stars Diljit Dosanjh, Sonakshi Sinha and Karan Johar, made only Rs75 lakh yesterday. Needless to say, the film faces a danger of being washed out at the box office.
