Director Abhinay Deo created something of a shockwave with his radical comedy Delhi Belly (2011). He now returns with another outrageous con job gone wrong in Blackmail.
The film, which stars Irrfan Khan, Kirti Kulhari, Divya Dutta and Arunoday Singh, is set to hit theatres on 6 April.
The trailer begins with two colleagues sharing a couple of drinks after work. Except that one of them, Dev (Khan), narrates the story where a husband ends up blackmailing his wife over her affair.
Khan's character is shown as the bumbling husband who attempts to blackmail his cheating wife, only to find her borrowing money from him to fulfil his own ransom demand.
But that is not the end of it. The story of the con soon goes wrong when more people find out about his ludicrous attempt and blackmail him in turns. The trailer hints that the little crime results in some hilarious things going wrong, and escalates out of control.
The trailer is cut sharply, and contains enough red herrings to make for an interesting plot. The film does have some touches of Deo's Delhi Belly (2011), not least the scene of Khan running through the streets with a paper bag over his head. The absurd humour in the trailer is also a consistent strain with Deo.
Khan and Kulhari look in good form, with Arunoday Singh playing the 'other one' in the affair. However, it remains to be seen if the film will be as irreverent and humorous as his 2011 cult comedy.
The film is produced by T-Series and RDP Motion Pictures.
