Kaushik Ganguly’s Bisorjon bagged the maximum number of awards at the Jio Filmfare Awards East 2018. Also, Atanu Ghosh’s Mayurakshi, Manas Mukul Paul’s Sahaj Pather Goppo (Colours of Innocence) and Anindya Chatterjee’s Projapoti Biskut got into the list of the most important films of 2017 with several awards to their credit.
The star-studded evening at the premises of Science City, Kolkata, was hosted by Abir Chatterjee and Parambrata Chattopadhyay.
Out of the 14 nominations, Ganguly won in four categories, including Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor in a Supporting Role and Best Original Story for Bishorjon; actress Jaya Ahsan received the Best Actor (Female) in a Leading Role and Anirban Sengupta received the award for Best Sound Design for Bisorjon.
The delighted filmmaker has been flooded with best wishes pouring in, ever since the announcements were made. Ganguly had also won the Filmfare Award the Best Film for Cinemawala, a year ago.
Actor Prosenjit Chatterjee, too, retained his position from the last year and won the Best Actor in a Leading Role for Mayurakshi by popular verdict. Mayurakshi also happened to be the Critics' Choice for Best Film and veteran actor Soumitra Chatterjee’s portrayal in the film was well appreciated with the Critics' Choice Award for Best Actor (Male). Actress Ishaa Saha from Projapoti Biskut emerged as the winner in the same category for the female.
Debut director Manas Mukul Paul not only proved his potential at the first go as he was awarded Best Debut Director for Sahaj Pather Goppo, but his film also dominated several other categories, including Best Screenplay and Best Editing.
Actors Noor Islam and Samiul Alam jointly won the award for the Best Debut (Male) for their surprisingly mature performances in Sahaj Pather Goppo as well.
Director Anindya Chatterjee, popular for his band Chandrabindu, received the award for Best Music Album for his film Projapoti Biskut along with Anupam Roy, Shantanu Moitra and Prasenjit Mukherjee. The film also won in other important categories in music as lead vocalist of Crosswindz, Chandrani Banerjee received the award for Best Playback Singer (Female) and budding lyricist Ritam Sen received the award for Best Lyrics. The award for Best Cinematographer went to Supriya Dutta from the team of Projapoti Biskut.
Music director Debajyoti Mishra won the award for Best Background Score for his renditions for Mayurakshi. Singer and composer Nachiketa Choudhury was awarded Best Playback Singer (Male) for Keno Erokom Kicchu Holo Na from Posto.
The Jio Filmfare Award East 2018 bestowed two Lifetime Achievement Awards on legendary filmmaker Mrinal Sen and veteran actress Sabitri Chattopadhyay for the unparalleled and enormous contributions in their respective fields of Bengali Cinema.
Among numerous other categories, Rukimi Maitra was awarded for her debut performance Chaamp and Cockpit.
