Box office: Padmaavat bags Rs159.50 crore nett in extended first week

Despite not being released in a few states, Sanjay Leela Bhansali's period film continues to shine at the box office.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s magnum opus Padmaavat has collected Rs159 crore nett mark in the domestic box office.

The 3D version of the film was released on Wednesday (24 January) while the regular 2D version hit the screens on Thursday (25 January).

Padmaavat has earned nearly Rs160 crore in its first eight days in theatres. Padmaavat bagged Rs10.25 crore nett on 1 February, as reported by Boxofficeindia.com.

Padmaavat review: A beautiful costume drama trying too hard to impress

After the extended opening weekend, where it bagged Rs105.5 crore, Padmaavat continued its strong showing over the week as well, earning over Rs10 crore nett each day.

The film was released across 3,500 screens in India. The earnings would have been better if the film had also been released in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan where a fringe group called the Rajput Karni Sena and the local state governments have been opposing it.

Padmaavat has been produced at an estimated budget of around Rs180 core. With no major releases this Friday (2 February), Padmaavat has a few more days to dominate the domestic box office. Next Friday will see the release of the Akshay Kumar-starrer Pad Man and the Manoj Bajpayee-starrer Aiyaary.

The film has been produced by Viacom18 Motion Pictures and Bhansali Productions, and co-distributed by Viacom18 and Paramount Pictures International. As per sources, the film's satellite rights were sold for an enviable Rs85 crore.
