Veteran Telugu actor Gundu Hanumantha Rao died at around 3am today at his residence in Hyderabad. He was 61 and is survived by a son. Rao was suffering from a kidney-related ailment for some time.
The actor is known for his comic acts in films and on television. According to The Hindu newspaper, he acted in over 400 movies.
Rao was born in 1956 in Vijayawada. He started as a theatre actor in a play called Ravana Brahma in the same city. His break in cinema came in Jandhyala Subramanya Sastry's Telugu movie Aha Naa Pellanta (1987), where he played the groom’s father.
Rao was known as a comic actor in films by producer-director SV Krishna Reddy.
He gained more popularity by acting in the TV sitcom Amrutham. Rao played a middle-aged man called Aamudaala Anjaneyulu, a partner in a restaurant and the chef. With more than 300 episodes, it is the longest-running Telugu sitcom till date.
