Civic body Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has slapped a showcause notice against actor Salman Khan’s NGO Being Human Foundation for allegedly failing to set up a dialysis centre in Mumbai a year after the project was allotted to it.
The BMC had planned to start 12 dialysis centres with 199 dialysis machines in December 2016 through a public-private partnership. As per the contract, the NGO was supposed to set up one centre while the BMC was to provide space for the same at Pali Hill in Bandra. The Being Human Foundation was also supposed to appoint the staff and look after its maintenance.
As the NGO failed to do so, the BMC sent them a notice warning them of the danger of being blacklisted. Additional municipal commissioner in charge of health confirmed to Mumbai Mirror that the showcause notice has been served to the NGO.
A senior civic official told the same publication, “Being Human, which was shortlisted for running the dialysis centre at Bandra (west), had paid the bank guarantee and was granted all the necessary permissions to go ahead with the project. But with the project not taking off, we have issued them a showcause notice warning that they would be blacklisted.”
However, Loretta Lewis, a representative from the NGO has denied having received any such notice. “The Being Human Foundation has certain mandatory requirements which need to be included in contracts. There were discussions around those which ultimately did not materialise. There was no formal contract/MoU signed at all,” she said.
