The Nirav Modi scam has rocked the nation ever since it was highlighted by the media yesterday. The jewellery brand owner is named by the Punjab National Bank for an alleged fraud of Rs11,000 crore. Modi has been out of India since 1 January.
His jewellery pieces are said to be popular among the Hindi film celebrities. But the brand’s connection with Priyanka Chopra has been deeper. The actress is the brand ambassador for Nirav Modi brand of jewellery in India and abroad.
With the outbreak of the scam, naturally, the focus was on Priyanka for her involvement with the brand. The actress hasn’t officially reacted on the matter. But her mother and parter in her film production venture, Dr Madhu Chopra reacted to the matter.
While talking to Times Now news channel, she said, “I am as shocked as you are with what I am watching on the television. I don’t want to say much because I am not the person who is officially supposed to be talking to you (about it).”
There have also been reports about Priyanka having sued Modi for non payment of dues for the advertisement she did for them. Actor Sidharth Malhotra, too, was signed by the brand. His contract ended a while ago.
However, in a recent development, Priyanka's publicist issued a statement saying: "There are speculative reports that Priyanka Chopra has sued Nirav Modi. This is not true. However, she is currently seeking legal opinion with respect to terminating her contract with the brand in light of allegations of financial fraud against Nirav Modi."
A number of Hindi film actresses like Deepika Padukone, Anushka Sharma, Sonam Kapoor, Jacqueline Fernandez, Shraddha Kapoor and Lisa Haydon, as well as Hollywood stars Kate Winslet, Dakota Johnson and Amy Adams have proudly flaunted the Nirav Modi brand of jewellery over the years in public appearances.
