Madhuri Dixit and Anil Kapoor became one of Hindi cinema's iconic pairs with their second film together, Tezaab (1988). Their first film together was Hifazat (1987) which had the ridiculously picturized 'Batata Vada' song.
Tezaab's Mohini and Munna, however, won cinegoers' hearts. The film had everything: romance, action, dance, drama and a happy ending. The film not only gave a boost to their individual careers, but also brought them into the limelight as a romantic pair.
Their next film together, Ram Lakhan (1989), did not focus on their romance, but the pair provided the much needed comic relief in the serious crime drama. Their on-screen chemistry was so magical that you really felt the pain of Radha (Dixit) when she sings 'Bada Dukh Dina' after being abandoned by her lover, Lakhan (Kapoor).
The strength and acceptance of the pair was cemented by Beta (1992). Here was Dixit at her sensuous best, wooing Kapoor with her dance in 'Dhak Dhak Karne Laga'.
The duo starred opposite each other in about 15 films. The long run was halted by Dixit's wedding to Dr Shriram Madhav Nene, a surgeon based in Los Angeles.
