The producers of Padmaavat, Viacom 18 Motion Pictures, have moved the Gujarat high court to make sure the film is released in the state. They have filed a petition to seek direction from the HC to the Gujarat government to organize police protection for the theatres for the smooth release of the film.
Padmaavat was released in India on 25 January. But the Gujarat Multiplex Owners Association refused to exhibit the film in the state fearing violence from the Rajput Karni Sena, that has been up in arms against the film, quite literally, for allegedly hurting the sentiments of people from the Rajput community.
“Exhibitors and distributors are ready to release the film, but are apprehensive about violence,” said the petition.
According to reports, the court is likely to hear the matter tomorrow.
Just a day before the film was released, violent protests took place in Ahmedabad with one theatre being set on fire. Following this, the decision not to exhibit the film was taken.
Along with Gujarat, Padmaavat was not released in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh despite the Supreme Court lifting the ban imposed by these states earlier.
