Arjun Kapoor, Swara Bhasker, Sonam Kapoor Ahuja all spoke out against the writer, Mariah Smith, and her claims that Chopra lured American musician Nick Jonas into marriage.

On 5 December, The Cut, a website by New York magazine, ran a piece by journalist Mariah Smith titled, ‘Is Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas’s Love for Real?’ that proceeded to give ‘evidence’ to why it wasn’t. The article painted American singer-actor Nick Jonas as the victim chosen by the actress and her PR team for her to marry.
Smith wrote: While Priyanka shops around for the finer things in life her team seems to be shopping around for the finer men. During the 2017 Vanity Fair party, her manager was standing next to Priyanka when Nick Jonas got on one knee and asked the actress, “Where have you been all my life?” This young man had enough interest in Priyanka to DM [direct message] her and publicly proclaim his lust. So, as far as Priyanka’s team must have seen it: He’d landed the role."
The tone-deaf piece went on to state that, “All Nick wanted was a possible fling with Hollywood’s latest It Woman, but instead he wound up staring straight at a life sentence with a global scam artist.” It derided their wedding, calling it 'SponCon' – indicating the brands they both promote, paid for it.
The outrage against Smith’s article was widespread both in India and in the US. Chopra and Jonas got married in an elaborate wedding held in Umaid Bhawan Palace in Jodhpur, Rajasthan on 1 and 2 December 2018.
Deeply disgusting. To character assassinate a hardworking, driven, achiever like Priyanka Chopra in this warped, petty manner & for @TheCut to publish such a low-brow piece is the lowest of the lows. “Priyanka’s plan to make this Nick Jonas opportunity her forever bitch” ?!!? Sick https://t.co/jV6bGChwhY

I am entirely puzzled by this piece of trash-talking performance art. (I mean can it be real? It sounds completely, hilariously off the rails) https://t.co/nfA9D9MIEK

A really great response to that wildly xenophobic article The Cut posted about Priyanka Chopra https://t.co/JDb1HXQgW6

maybe don't get the wacky admin of the nick jonas fan club page to write a bitter, angry piece about his nuptials https://t.co/amFBSlNkRO
Hindi film stars, from Arjun Kapoor to Swara Bhasker, spoke out in support of the newlywed couple.
I know @priyankachopra personally & I’m fairly certain @nickjonas hasn’t been kidnapped & forced into a union of love... @NYMag u have an unhappy opinionated racist frustrated journalist who’s gone on n on about 2 people who by choice have gotten married. Tacky n uncouth writing. https://t.co/ngLvyqw6fD

Depressed with the state of the world & current affairs? Here’s some good ol’ fashioned puerile filth published by @TheCut 2 add some pointless venom 2 ur day. Also someone invite @mRiah to an Indian wedding 🙄🙄🙄 Might assuage some of her misguided angst! #yellowjournalism https://t.co/3q8cPMElrp

For a publication that “shows women’s what they are made of” @TheCut has a lot to answer for . The article on @priyankachopra was sexist , racist and disgusting. Also it’s written by a woman which is so sad. It reeks of envy and bitterness. @mRiah shame on you! https://t.co/bmbbX7LrAT

Chopra’s brother-in-law, Joe, and his fiancée, Sophie Turner, also tweeted about the slanderous piece.
This is disgusting. @TheCut should be ashamed to have someone write such evil words. What Nick & Pri have is Beautiful Love. Thank u, Next. https://t.co/G3hvXmhm9O

This is wildly inappropriate and totally disgusting. Very disappointed that The Cut would give anyone a platform to spew such bullshit. https://t.co/iYKaifKJP6

The Cut updated the article to remove some of the more offensive terms, including the claim that it was all ‘a scam’. The keyword tag on the article remained on for a long time, until it too was deleted.
So @TheCut seems to have removed references to global scam artist & home theater ownership with this footnote which says the post has been updated. pic.twitter.com/I40KRfSGD0

Later, the editorial team removed the article altogether and put up a statement and an apology when the criticism against the piece grew.
It said, “Last night, the Cut published a post about Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra’s relationship that shouldn’t have gone up. We’ve received dozens of messages from readers expressing their anger. We want you to know that we hear you and we’re sorry. The whole piece missed the mark. There is no good explanation for this other than human error and poor judgement. This was a mistake, and we apologize to our readers and to Priyanka and Nick.”
An earlier story about Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas did not meet our standards. We've removed it and apologize https://t.co/DkcOatMV2z
