Since the launch of his co-production, Macguffin Pictures, Honey Trehan has been planning for his directorial debut. The film is finally ready to go on the floors on 21 January. Titled Raat Akeli Hai, the film will feature Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Radhika Apte in the lead role, with Tigmanshu Dhulia, Ila Arun and Aaditya Shrivastava providing supporting roles.

While Trehan was initially set to direct the Irrfan Khan-Deepika Padukone featured Sapna Didi, he walked out of the project citing creative differences. Later, the project had to be shelved in the view of Irrfan Khan's unexpected illness.

The crew for Raat Akeli Hai is set to begin the new year with a shoot schedule in Lucknow on 21 January. Reportedly a romantic thriller, the film is written by Smita Singh, who is also co-writer for Sacred Games.

This will also mark the feature film debut for Singh as writer.

Trehan has assisted Vishal Bhardwaj in films like Makdee (2002), Maqbool (2004), Omkara (2006), and Kaminey (2009). He also worked as an assistant with Abhishek Chaubey for Dedh Ishqiya (2014) and Udta Punjab (2016).

Speaking to Hindustan Times, Trehan said, "My story is based and set in these two cities (Lukhnow and Kanpur) and in the film too they will be named as the original location. From start-to-end, the entire shoot will be done here. We have a long schedule of two months. We are also casting a lot of actors from Uttar Pradesh and the selection process for that is on."

The director launched his home production, Macguffin Pictures, and produced Konkona Sensharma's A Death In The Gunj in 2017.
