The trailer of Kamaleswar Mukherjee’s upcoming film Mukhomukhi was launched yesterday at Hard Rock Café, Kolkata, in the presence of the director, lead artistes Jisshu Sengupta, Payel Sarkar, Saheb Bhattacharya, Darshana Banik, Rajatava Dutta, Ushasie Chakraborty and Padmanabha Dasgupta, and music composer Debajyoti Mishra. The film also features Gargee Roy Chowdhury and Anjan Dutt in important roles.
The trailer shows that Mukherjee has pushed his boundaries to present a thoroughly experimental film that does not follow a linear plot progression. Instead, he has attempted to create a fourth wall between the audience and the characters that are sketched and conceived as characters from a play.
From the look and the set designs that don’t replicate real life, it appears the director has kept the idea that 'all the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players' at the centre to raise certain questions that we otherwise fear to ask ourselves.
Roy Chowdhury plays an award-winning author while Dutt plays her husband. Both start working on a novel and keep experimenting with the characters' journey. There are references to many metaphors in the trailer and the use of a lot of imagery that is more often seen in stagecraft.
The trailer suggests that the film deals with a difficult subject and will require the audience to invest a lot of patience and effort to get through to its gist. From one of Roy Chowdhury’s dialogues, it appears that much like the characters from Luigi Pirandello’s Six Characters In Search Of An Author, the characters from the film too go out of the authors’ reign and evolve with time, on their own.
Mukhomukhi is slated for released on 1 February 2019. Watch the trailer below and let us know if you are looking forward to the film.
