Shah Jahan Regency trailer: Creates anticipation for a collage of dramatic stories

The trailer of Srijit Mukherjee’s upcoming film Shah Jahan Regency is out. According to the director, the film is not a remake of Pinaki Bhushan Mukherji’s film Chowringhee (1968); rather, it is a modern-day adaptation of the novel Chowringhee, written by Shankar.

Starring Parambrata Chatterjee, the film revolves around the guests, visitors and employees of the hotel Shah Jahan Regency and their stories, which the director promises in the trailer to delineate with individual attention.

Swastika Mukherjee, Rituparna Sengupta, Abir Chatterjee, Anjan Dutt, Mamata Shankar, Rittika Sen, Kanchan Mullick and Anirban Bhattacharya will also be seen in pivotal roles in the film.

The trailer begins with an adaptation of the famous poem, “Our life is but a winter’s day…” by Francis Quarles, narrated by Dutt. Dedicated employee Sata Bose (Abir Chatterjee) explains the work ethic to Shankar, the protagonist (Parambrata Chatterjee), who enrols as an employee at the hotel. The snippet visuals gradually introduce all the characters — some shedding tears behind the closed doors of hotel rooms, others trying to don a new mask every day.

Shankar gets caught up in a scandalous situation and Bose advises him to be ready for all kinds of interactions in a place where people from various social backgrounds drop in. While some fall in love, some are tipped to perform the act of love.

Betrayals and pain wreck some of them. Hopes and dreams desert others. Towards the end of the trailer, Bose says, “Shah Jahan is dead,” implying the crumbling state of the hotel. Shankar concludes by saying, “Have you read Shankar’s Chowringhee? My story is Chowringhee reborn in 2017.”

The grandeur of the hotel creates a charm while the drama that unfolds behind the walls generates anticipation for the film. The laidback background score by Indraadip Dasgupta and the song work in contrast with the intensity of the events of the trailer. Glimpses of Swastika Mukherjee’s sequences turn out to be the most dramatic.
