Dhanush’s Maari 2, in which he returns as a local ruffian sporting twirled moustache and John Lennon glasses, is set for a grand release on 21 December.
Ahead of the release, Dhanush met the press in Chennai on Tuesday and opened up about the project. He revealed that playing the character of Maari 2 was more challenging than playing the character of Anbu in Vada Chennai (2018), which was Dhanush’s last release. Dhanush also went on to add that they have plans for Maari 3 but its fate will be decided based on the success of Maari 2.
“Maari as a character will always remain special. As a character, playing Maari was more challenging than playing Anbu in Vada Chennai. Playing Anbu was easy because it’s a character driven by guilt and that’s why he has a very reserved expression most of the time. I could easily portray it, but Maari on the other hand is neither good nor bad, and how do you play such a character,” Dhanush said.
He added that he had to improvise a lot on the spot. He also said that being Maari was fun. “There are so many people who keep bothering you in real life but you can’t do anything about it. Sometimes, you clench your teeth and try to calm yourselves. It’s through the character of Maari I could take out my frustration on these people,” he added.
Maari 2, directed by Balaji Mohan, also stars Sai Pallavi, Krishna, Varalaxmi Sarath Kumar and Robo Shankar among others.
Talking about Maari 3, Dhanush said: “The success of Maari 2 will decide the fate of Maari 3. I’ve been the happiest playing this character and I’d love to play Maari all over again.”
