These days, if a number has been recreated for a film, the odds are that it’s Tanishk Bagchi behind the scenes. Last week, he was the man behind the ‘Aankh Marey’ song from Simmba. Today, it’s ‘Tere Bin’, a number originally made famous by famed singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.
The romantic number is the latest song from the upcoming Simmba, starring Ranveer Singh and Sara Ali Khan. The duet seems like a fairy tale dream in the action thriller directed by Rohit Shetty. The fresh pairing of Singh and Khan are transported to the picturesque mountains and cobbled streets of Switzerland as they serenade one another.
Incidentally, Singh is already an ambassador for Switzerland Tourism. Looks like the song’s location is no coincidence.
Nusrat’s nephew, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, and Asees Kaur’s voices perfectly elevate this beautiful track. Rahat is a worthy successor to his uncle and Kaur’s vocals are a welcome addition to the music scene.

Bagchi has lent his vocals and re-recreated 'Tere Bin' with additional lyrics by Rashmi Virag. A portion of 'Tere bin nahin lagda', written by KH Pervez, has been included here. While the memories of the original still linger, especially if you're a Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan fan, this version has its own charm.
Bagchi has allowed the music to remain simply in the background and allowed Rahat and Kaur’s voices to power the song. It was heartening to see that flautist Sriram Sampath was singled out for his musical performance on the song's YouTube description. We hope this trend continues.
Back in 1999, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan had composed the score for Milan Luthria's Kachche Dhaage, where he too had recreated the folk song using the vocals of Lata Mangeshkar and Sukhwinder Singh in male and female versions. The song was picturised on Ajay Devgn and Manisha Koirala.
Simmba, produced by Hiroo and Karan Johar, Apoorva Mehta and Rohit Shetty, closes out the year on 28 December 2018.
