Rani Mukerji is all set to star as senior inspector Shivani Shivaji Roy again in the sequel to Mardaani (2014). The actress made a return to Hindi cinema this year with Siddharth P Malhotra's Hichki (2018), after the birth of her first child Adira in 2015. The sequel will be directed by Gopi Puthran who wrote the screenplay of Mardaani.
Produced by Aditya Chopra, Mardaani 2 is due to go on floors next year and is scheduled to be released in the second half 2019.
In a press release, the actress stated, “Mardaani is and will always be extremely close to my heart. Right since its release, everyone has asked me time and again when I would be doing Mardaani 2 and I’m sure this announcement will come as a pleasant surprise to them all. Gopi has written an extraordinary script that we all love and I can’t wait to start shooting this film soon.”
For the first film, Shivani took on the head of a cartel, Karan Rastogi (Tahir Raj Bhasin) who ran a drug and child-trafficking ring and came out victorious.
Mukerji gave a bit of tease when speaking about the villain of the next film in the franchise. She said, "Shivani will face a cold, merciless villain who has no empathy, no fear of God and is pure evil. The character has been written superbly and I’m excited to find out who the actor will be."
The actress also has a special appearance in Aanand L Rai's Zero (2018) with many of Shah Rukh Khan's heroines making a cameo as well.
