With his last release, Mukkabaaz (2018) released earlier this year, filmmaker Anurag Kashyap indicated a shift towards mainstream commercial cinema. Now, with Manmarziyaan, he moves further into the territory. The makers released the trailer of the film starring Taapsee Pannu, Vicky Kaushal and Abhishek Bachchan.
Manmarziyan is about two bold and carefree lovers Vicky (Kaushal) and Rumi (Pannu), living in a north Indian town. They wish to spend the rest of their lives together but Vicky lacks the courage to approach her parents for their marriage. This causes a rift between them. Enter the simple and innocent Robbie (Abhishek Bachchan) who falls for Rumi.
Manmarziyaan looks like a mixture of producer Aanand L Rai’s light-heartedness and Kashyap’s boldness. The film has simple characters from north Indian towns who mouth witty dialogues. Rai's Tanu Weds Manu films have had many of these. But this time, they are seen using profane language and indulging in intimate acts.
A merger of two different filmmaking sensibilities adds to the expectations from Manmarziyaan.
The trailer also gives a glimpse into the rich music and production values.
Fresh after the success of Raazi (2018) and Sanju (2018), Kaushal is in good form. His character is outspoken and bold.
After the recently released Mulk, Pannu appears promising in Manmarziyaan too. Bachchan's return to films is appreciated, even though we don't see much of his character in the trailer.
Manmarziyaan will be out in theatres on 14 September.
