Actress Rani Mukerji played the central character surrounded by a number of youngsters in Hichki (2018) earlier this year. Now, Rani's cousin Kajol will do the same in Helicopter Eela. However, there is no similarity between the films.
Directed by Pradeep Sarkar, Helicopter Eela is an unusual story of a mother Eela (Kajol) becoming her son’s (Riddhi Sen) classmate as she joins college after 22 years to complete her education.
At one point, we see that she used to star in music albums, but had to discontinue that profession along with her studies for some reason. However, her son is too embarrassed to see his mother in his class. This is enough to create tension between the two.
The trailer of the film makes it clear that the film is a light-hearted affair with an unusual storyline, although you are reminded of Swara Bhasker's character's journey in Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari's Nil Battey Sannata (2016). The portions where Eela enters the college as a student after ages are hilarious. The only issue here is the transformation from funny to serious which appears sudden.
Kajol appears to fit the role of the colourful Eela. Sen’s casting is also perfect and the bond between the two is organic.
Produced by Ajay Devgn Films and Pen India, Helicopter Eela will be released on 7 September.
