Vikas Bahl's biopic Super 30, starring Hrithik Roshan, faced a jolt after mathematician Anand Kumar, whose life the film is based on, was accused of allegedly fudging data about the number of his students who got selected in the IITs this year.

As per a report in Mid-Day, a tabloid, this development has compelled Bahl and the film's producers, Sajid Nadiadwala and Madhu Mantena, to not call the film a biopic any more and treat it as a fiction story.

The publication quoted a source saying, “Since the film is in post-production, they are considering removing all references to Anand. While it will revolve around a Math whiz whose coaching institute becomes successful, they will categorically not call it a biopic any more.”

Reportedly, the film will now narrate the tale of a common man who overcomes all odds to educate underprivileged children.

Under the Super 30 program, Kumar had claimed to have been coaching 30 underprivileged students each year for the IIT-JEE (Advanced) examinations free of cost. However, some of his students have recently alleged that many of the candidates were taken to another institute, called Ramanauj School of Mathematics, where they were asked to pay a fee of around Rs33,000 each.

Kumar has also been accused of inflating the number of students passing the entrance examinations from the Super 30 program. Earlier in the year he had said that 26 of his students had cleared the IIT-JEE (Advance) examinations. However, he could not substantiate this claim.

Further, a source who was once associated with Kumar had revealed that the real creator of Super 30 is Mr Abhayanand, an IPS officer. Abhayanand roped in Kumar to teach and manage the day-to-day affairs of the centre that was meant to train poor children. However, the two parted ways after Kumar accepted a cash prize of Rs5 lakh though Abhayanand had refused it.

Speaking to us, Abhayanand had said, “For me this was always a social initiative. I never wanted to commercialize it in any way. That is why I had refused the cash prize. I didn’t like it that Anand Kumar took the cash prize at the function [CNN-IBN Real Heroes]. It was then that I started to get suspicious of his motives. We separated in 2008, and I then started my Rahmani 30 programme after local Muslims requested me to help them.”

Super 30, produced by Phantom Films and Reliance Entertainment, is due to be released on 25 January 2019.
