In a departure from the practice of launching music videos, the makers of Manmarziyaan decided to turn the clock back a bit and first unveil the film's audio tracks. As a listener, you could focus purely on the quality of the songs.
Now, the makers have started releasing the video tracks. First up is the 'Daryaa' song.
Penned by Shellee, 'Daryaa' is a heartbreaking ballad. It’s heartbreak for Robbie (Abhishek Bachchan) and for Vicky (Vicky Kaushal), while Rumi (Taapsee Pannu) is caught in a dilemma. She can’t forget her love Vicky, but she does not want to break suitable boy Robbie's heart. A darya (river) of tears flows through the three hearts.
The lyrics are in fairly simple Punjabi and so Hindi-speaking audiences should not face much of a problem understanding them. The visuals aid the viewers understand the song better.

The neat lyrics are backed by an exemplary score by Amit Trivedi. Though the situation is grim, the music is not depressing. When you give a livelier score for a ballad, you run the risk of losing the essence of the song, but just as a filmmaker needs the audience to fill up the theatres, a composer wants many ears for his composition. Trivedi’s gripping score lights up the sombre lyrics.
The song has been sung by Ammy Virk and Shahid Mallya, two unheralded singers. Virk is the first name in the credits and so we assume he is the lead singer. He has a gifted, soft voice that brings out the state of mind and heart of Rumi, Robbie and Vicky. Mallya's is probably the supporting vocal. Perhaps, he is the one who croons the hook line, ‘Oh beh gaya hanjuaah da daryaa [the river of tears flows on]'.
Many of the visuals have been seen in the trailer. Like in the trailer, here, too, it is the obsession of Vicky, Robbie’s gentlemanly behaviour, and Pannu’s devil-may-care attitude that strike you.
Watch the 'Daryaa' song below and let us know if you will be watching this film in the theatres when it is released on 14 September.
