Batti Gul Meter Chalu song: Shahid, Shraddha grow apart in 'Dekhte Dekhte'

The ballad, reworked from an older Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan qawwali, lacks heart to make it memorable.

In the song ‘Dekhte Dekhte’ from Batti Gul Batti Meter Chalu (2018), the characters of Shahid Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor grow further apart after a tragedy halts their budding romance. As hard as Shahid tries to initiate any response from Shraddha, he is unable to recreate those happy moments they once spent together.

This ballad has been reworked from an older Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan qawwali, 'Sochta Hoon Ke Woh Kitne Masoon Thay' into this current contemporary version sung by Atif Aslam. The music has been done by Rochak Kohli while the lyrics of the qawwali have been rewritten by Manoj Muntashir.

However, this version lacks the heart of the original. Despite using Atif Aslam's vocals, and a more contemporary sound, the song's mid-transition to its qawwali roots feels out of place. The original, of course, relied heavily on the voice and presence of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.

‘Dekhte Dekhte’ is not a terrible listen, but all the while, you feel that there’s something missing.
