Three directors from the Tamil film industry are vying to make biopics on former AIADMK secretary and Tamil Nadu chief minister late J Jayalalithaa.

Director AL Vijay, known for having made films like Poi Solla Porom (2008), Madharasapattinam (2010), Deiva Thirumagal (2011) and Thalaivaa (2013), was the first one to announce his project. The film is to be produced by Brinda Prasad, and its shoot is to begin from 24 February, on Jayalalithaa's birth anniversary, next year. According to sources, the film's team plans to approach actress Vidya Balan to play the lead.

Soon Priyadarshini, another filmmaker, announced her film on the late politician. She will reportedly also produce the film herself and announced that she has four scripts ready, each focusing on a different aspect of Jayalalithaa's life.

Now, director P Bharathiraja too is said to be planning a biopic on Jayalalithaa. The film is to be produced by Adithya Bharadwaj and will be titled Amma: Puratchi Thalaivi.

This team is looking to rope in music composer Ilaiyaraaja for the project. If this happens, the film will mark the coming together of Bharathirajaa and Ilaiyaraaja, who parted ways after a bitter fight. It may be recalled that quite a number of films that the two legends have jointly worked on have gone on to be either trendsetters or classics.

Meanwhile, none of the contending filmmakers have so far recieved required permissions from the immediate family members of Jayalalithaa. She passed away on 5 December 2016 after a cardiac arrest.
