Brothers Imtiaz and Arif Ali seem to be fascinated with the romantic genre. While Imtiaz is known for making films like Socha Na Tha (2005), Jab We Met (2007), Love Aaj Kal (2009), Tamasha (2015) and Jab Harry Met Sejal (2017), Arif helmed the rom-com Lekar Hum Deewana Dil (2014). Now, their younger brother Sajid Ali is set to make his directorial debut with a romantic drama, titled Laila Majnu.
As seen from the trailer, Sajid’s Majnu (Avinash Tiwary) seems to have have lost his bearings after being separated from his lover. The latest song from the film, 'Hafiz Hafiz', has a certain madness attached to the character. Love can make one go crazy and that is what we see Majnu (Avinash Tiwary) going through in the song. It is this craziness that defines Majnu, and more importantly, the visuals are apt for the lyrics.
Laila Majnu song: Arijit Singh digs deep into a lover's heart for ‘Aahista’
The word Hafiz means a person who knows the Koran by heart. The lyricist (uncredited) has the Majnu calling himself a hafiz and a kafir (non-believer) at the same time. The two words seem odd in a verse. Majnu believes in love and that is amply clear from the various emotions he displays in the song.
Singer Mohit Chauhan enjoyed his finest hour with Imtiaz Ali’s Rockstar (2011). He now joins hands with Imtiaz's younger brother. Chauhan had fallen off the radar for some time but his unique voice lightens up the average lyrics here. Niladri Kumar has given a fine energetic score.
Chauhan's voice and Tiwary’s crazy acts make the 'Hafi Hafiz' number appealing.
Laila Majnu is set to be released on 7 September.
