Sui Dhaaga trailer: Varun, Anushka are a handy pair in this emotional drama on self-reliance

The film, written and directed by Sharat Katariya, features the Varun Dhawan and Anushka Sharma for the first time together.

In Yash Raj Films’ Sui Dhaaga: Made In India, Varun Dhawan is Mauji, a happy-go-lucky young man, married to Mamta, played by Anushka Sharma. The husband and wife don’t know each other too well as family and work pressures constantly take them apart.

When Mamta discovers that the gullible Mauji is made to act like an animal in front of others by his boss, she asks him to do something of his own, so he won’t be humiliated. He loses his job as an office boy and brings out a sewing machine, a hand-me-down from his grandfather who was a tailor.

Thus, husband and wife venture out to create their own little business and become artisans in the process. However, their family is not so understanding and as the couple set out to expand their business, they are advised to add a ‘Made In China’ tag to increase sales.

An emotional Mamta rejects the proposal and insists that they stay true to their roots. They name their company – Sui Dhaaga: Mad(e) In India. The word ‘made’ is adorably misspelled ‘mad’ by Mauji.

Written and directed by Sharat Katariya, the trailer hits all the right notes of a couple’s journey to self-reliance and self-worth. Dhawan is especially endearing as Mauji who insists ‘Sab badiya hain’ which could very well be the new ‘All Izz Well’. Sharma is bit more subdued than in her previous roles as a typical Indian baahu and wife, but she shows her assertiveness where it counts.

This small-town film makes the ordinary artisans of India the hero and heroine of the story. Dhawan and Sharma, cast together for the first time in deglamourized Indian avatars, are a pair we look forward to seeing on the screen.

Sui Dhaaga: Made In India is due to be released on 28 September 2018.
