The teaser of Rajkumar Hirani's biopic on actor Sanjay Dutt, titled Sanju, released this past week on 24 April. Revealing a glimpse of Dutt's journey, the teaser whetted audiences' appetites and left them hanging for more.
Another biopic, Soorma, based on the incredible comeback story of Indian hockey player Sandeep Singh, was due to be released on the same day as Sanju on 29 June.
However, the makers of the film announced a new release date — 13 July — probably to avoid a clash with Sanju. Produced by Sony Pictures Productions, Soorma is written and directed by Shaad Ali.
As both films are biopics and their protagonists come back to their respective fields after insurmoutable odds, it is natural that their audiences might be similar.
Additionally, the cast of Sanju boasts of stars like Ranbir Kapoor, Anuskha Sharma, Sonam Kapoor and Manisha Koirala, among others. While Soorma stars Diljit Dosanjh, Taapsee Pannu and Angad Bedi. The sports biopic would have been adversely affected had it clashed with Sanju at the box office.
Sanju co-produced by Vinod Chopra Films, Rajkumar Hirani Films and Fox Star Studios.
