Actor Irrfan Khan's upcoming film Puzzle (2018) has been selected to open the 72nd Edinburgh International Film Festival. The film, directed by Marc Turtletaub, will be shown on Wednesday, 20 June.
Khan stars with actress Kelly Macdonald in the family drama. Macdonald plays Agnes, a young woman who leads a monotonous life as a housewfe and mother. She completes a jigsaw puzzle, received as a birthday gift, and begins to see that there might be more to life than just her home and family.
She meets Khan's character Robert, a rich inventor, who needs a partner for a puzzle competition and she expands her horizons, much to the dismay of her husband Louie, played by David Denman.
Khan announced in March 2018 that he had been diagnosed with a neuroendocrine tumour. He is taking some personal time to tend to his health. He was not available to promote Blackmail (2018) which was released on 6 April.
Turtletaub and Macdonald are expected to attend the opening screening. The director said in a statement to trade magazine Variety, "It’s a great honour to be invited to have Puzzle open Edinburgh International Film Festival 2018. This world class Festival has been a personal favourite for a long time, and being able to showcase Kelly’s performance here makes it even more rewarding."
Puzzle is due to be released in the UK and UK by Sony Pictures Classics in July 2018.
