A lot of Hindi film celebrities have expressed their shock, anger and anguish at the rape and murder of an 8-year-old girl in Kathua in Jammu and Kashmir. The victim was allegedly raped inside a temple for six days before she was killed.

One notable absence in the voices against the heinous crime is that of Amitabh Bachchan's. This is a big surprise for his fans, more so because the actor is also the brand ambassador of the government’s Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao campaign.

When asked to comment on the incident at a media event last week, he brushed aside the question saying, “Even discussing this issue feels disgusting. Don’t bring up this issue. It is terrible to even talk about it.” This didn’t go down well with the citizens, and criticism poured on the social media questioning Bachchan’s silence.

The latest reproach came from actress and filmmaker Pooja Bhatt who took a dig at Bachchan while highlighting that he acted in a film like Pink (2016), which advocated women's rights. She shared the news of Bachchan refusing to speak on the issue on Twitter, and wrote, “I can’t help being reminded of a film called #Pink. Can our images on screen please be reflected in reality?”
