Actor Rajkummar Rao is likely to travel to France this May as his Hollywood film 5 Weddings is set to have its world premiere at the presitgious Cannes International Film Festival this year. Directed by Indian American filmmaker Namrata Singh Gujral, 5 Weddings also features Nargis Fakhri in the lead.
“We are thrilled!” exulted US-based director Singh Gujral. “This will be the first time an audience will watch the film so it is exciting but also nerve-wracking,” she said in a statement.
5 Weddings narrates the story of an American journalist Shania Dhaliwal (Fakhri) who travels to India to cover 'Bollywood' weddings. Harbhajan Singh (Rajkummar) is assigned as a liaison officer whose sole job is to prevent any journalistic espionage under India's censorship laws.
“The film is a colourful mosaic of lost loves, transgender tangles and culture clashes along the heartfelt journey of life, symbolised by the universal ups and downs of a wedding celebration,” added Gujral.
Gujral had conceived the film in 2008 and she had initially offered the film to Punjabi singer Harbhajan Mann. Unfortunately, the project couldn’t take off then as Singh Gujral was diagnosed with cancer. Upon recovery, Singh Gujral roped in Fakhri and Rajkummar for the lead roles.
5 Weddings has been shot across Los Angeles, Hollywood, and parts of Punjab.
