Remaking the Marathi blockbuster Sairat (2016) in Hindi was always going to be tough. If that was not challenge enough, the makers of Dhadak have also attempted to recreate the iconic song 'Zingaat' from the original.
Karan Johar, the producer of the film, handed over the mammoth task to his close friend and celebrated choreographer Farah Khan. However, she refused the offer initially.
“Karan said that his director Shashank (Khaitan) was scared to call me, and that he really wants me to do a song for the movie. The minute he said that the song in question is Zingaat, I told him that I won't do it because it's a cult song,” she said while speaking on a TV show.
Although Khan eventually agreed, her difficulties increased as there was a difference of opinion between Johar and the film’s director. The former wanted it to be ran item number while Khaitan had something else in mind.
“Karan said he wanted it to be big and commercial, it has to be the ‘item song’ of the movie. On the other hand, the director wanted it to be natural and earthy,” added Farah. She eventually took the middle path and made it into “a mix of commercial and candid.”
The lead pair, Janhvi Kapoor and Ishan Khatter shot the song with the ace choreographer in January.
The original song from the Nagraj Manjule-directed movie became a rage when it was released and continues to be played at various events, festivals and parties in Maharashtra.
While Dhadak will mark the debut of Sridevi's daughter Janhvi Kapoor, it will be Shahid Kapoor's brother Ishaan Khatter's second film. Dhadak is slated to hit the theatres on 20 July.
