The actress, who played the role of Mary Kom on screen, said she was proud to have the boxer as her friend.

Actress Priyanka Chopra, who is currently shooting for her American TV show, Quantico, in Ireland, took to social media to congratulate boxer Mary Kom on winning gold in her maiden Commonwealth Games appearance.

The 35-year-old legend won India’s first gold medal in boxing at the Commonwealth Games 2018 being held in Gold Coast, Australia, by beating Ireland's Kristina O'Hara in the women’s 48kg final today (14 April).

Chopra, who played the role of Mary Kom in the 2014 film by the same name, directed by Omung Kumar, wrote that she was proud of her friend for the achievement. The film depicted Mary Kom's journey of becoming a boxer upto her victory at the 2008 World Boxing Championships in Ningbo, which was her fourth title win at the competition.

Kom has gone on to add many more wins to her list of achievements since then. In the recent years, she has won the gold medal at 2017 Asian Women's Championship and 2014 Asian Games, and bronze at the 2012 Summer Olympics.

Chopra and Kom had become good friends while the former prepared for the role. The actress celebrated the boxer's win with a tweet, "I'm sooooo proud of my friend and India’s pride @MangteC you are and always will be my champion! Congratulations!! Yay!"
