Rajpal Yadav, wife convicted of defaulting on loan, to be sentenced on 23 April

Hindi film actor Rajpal Yadav and his wife Radha were convicted in a loan recovery case today by the Karkardooma courts in Delhi.

The court will announce the sentence later this month on 23 April.

Yadav had taken a loan of Rs5 crore from MG Agarwal, a Delhi-based businessman, in 2010 for his maiden production Ata Pata Laapata (2012), which also marked his directorial debut.

The film turned out to be a disaster at the box office. According to boxofficeindia.com, the film was made on a budget of Rs11 crore but earned less than Rs50 lakh at the box office.

Apart from Yadav, it had an ensemble cast of character artistes like Ashutosh Rana, Vikram Gokhale, Yashpal Sharma, Vijay Raaz, Mukesh Tiwari, Zakir Hussain, Manoj Joshi, Govind Namdeo, Asrani, and the late Dara Singh.

This was also the late theatre legend Satyadev Dubey's last film.

Agarwal had taken Yadav and his wife to court after they failed to repay his loan.

Yadav was sent into judicial custody for 10 days in 2013 for concealing facts about the case. The court had also ordered attachment of his assets and bank accounts.

Two lawyers and an oath commissioner were also issued contempt of court notices for submitting an affidavit which had fake signatures of the accused couple.

At a court proceeding in 2015, Yadav claimed to have already repaid Rs1.58 crore to Agarwal and promised to pay the remaining amount in the next 30 days as he had received an offer from a company that had agreed to repay the amount on his behalf. This, however, did not happen.

Known for his comic timing, Yadav has acted in close to 150 films in a career spanning almost 20 years.
