Actress Alia Bhatt is playing an interesting spy character in Meghna Gulzar’s next, Raazi. In a number of spy films, we have seen the protagonist use some high-tech gadgets to outsmart their opponents. But Raazi didn’t have that luxury since the film is based in the early 1970s.
“This is based in 1971. So, the modes of communication were very different from what we know today,” said Gulzar in the making of the film which is just released.
The film involves Alia’s character using a technique called Morse code to transfer secret information. Speaking about her experience, Bhatt said, “Through the film there is a lot of intel that I transfer through morse. I actually had to memorize the codes and I landed up mugging up all the codes. So, whatever I was learning was a genuine training session.”
Interestingly, the biggest challenge for her was driving the Jonga car. “The most terrifying part was when I had to drive a Jonga. I had never driven it before in my life. So, I was a little nervous about it because that was a very important sequence but I had to drive that car,” she said.
Filmmaker Karan Johar’s office came to Bhatt's rescue then. “I would go to Dharma Productions’ (office) basement. So, we landed up circling the basement 7 in the morning because that was the only time when the basement was empty,” she recounted.
Raazi will be released on 11 May.
