Box office: Bhoomi & Haseena disappoint, Newton gets average opening

There was no respite for the new Hindi film releases at the box office as a majority of them continued to disappoint. This week saw three releases — Bhoomi, Haseena Parkar and Newton.

Sanjay Dutt’s comeback film Bhoomi failed to make an early impression as the film opened to just Rs2crore nett, as reported by BoxOfficeIndia.com. Made at an estimated budget of Rs32 crore, the film has been released across 1,300 screens. The largely negative reviews are likely to hamper the film's chances over the weekend.

Like Bhoomi, Shraddha Kapoor’s Haseena Parkar, too, fared poorly, bagging  only Rs1.25 crore nett on its opening day. Based on the life of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim’s sister, Haseena Parkar is made at an estimated budget of Rs19 crore, and the film was released across 1,100 screens. Like Bhoomi, Haseena Parkar, too, hasn’t received great reviews.

The one film that has so far received postive reviews is Rajkummar Rao’s Newton. The film got an average opening opening of Rs85 lakh nett.

On the face of it, it may not seem like a great number, but Newton has the advantage of a low budget of Rs9 crore nett and it has released across only 500 screens. The film received a huge boost on the day of its release after it was picked as India’s official entry to the Oscars. The makers will hope that the postive reviews and a strong word-of-mouth will help the film to grow over the weekend.

Meanwhile, Hollywood film Kingsman: The Golden Circle is said to have bagged a little over Rs2 crore nett on its opening day.

Unless the numbers don’t improve over the weekend, both Bhoomi and Haseena Parkar face a tough challenge. The low budget and positive reviews are likely to brighten the chances of Newton to recover its cost. Whatever business these films make, it will have to be done in a week's time for come 29 September, Varun Dhawans much-hyped Judwaa 2 will hit the cinemas.
