A 3D treat: Making of Rajinikanth's 2.0 video

The making video of director S Shankar's film 2.0 has evoked a phenomenal response from audiences. The film features Rajinikanth, Amy Jackson and Akshay Kumar in the lead.

The video, titled Making of 2.0 — 3D Featurette, was released yesterday and has several technicians and actors speaking of the reasons and the positives of making the film in 3D. 

Director S Shankar, who appears in the video, says, "This film was shot in 3D, not for the sake of 3D but because the script demanded 3D technology. A lot of Hollywood films were shot in 2D and then were converted to 3D in post-production. But this film was shot in the latest 3D camera directly. When I look at the scenes on the monitor, I feel like as if I am there where the story is happening."

The director also spoke about the visual effect in the film, "There are a lot of visual effects and action scenes in this film. More than a movie, this is an experience. That experience can be fully tapped only by 3D technology. I hope this film will encourage a lot of producers to come up with more 3D films and a lot of theatres will be converted to 3D theatres. I hope that happens after this movie."

Cinematographer Nirav Shah, too, chips in his views, "3D gets you right in the middle of the action. But because we have not seen it so much in India, it's almost magical. Everything looks much bigger. When you are shooting for 2D you are shooting a flat image. But you are shooting for 3D, you are shooting for space. The depth that you can create by shooting in native 3D is brilliant."

For his part, actor Rajinikanth says, "Shankar wrote this script, keeping 3D in mind. That is the most important thing. I saw the first 3D shot on a small screen. I was repeatedly watching it. I don't know how many times I have watched it. I will appreciate Shankar because it was mesmerising. I am waiting to see the audience's reaction. I assure you it is not less than any big Hollywood 3D movie."

The video also had a star from the Hindi cinema, Akshay Kumar, who plays the villain in the film: "Working in 3D is a lot harder than I imagined from the setup to the extent of how perfect things need to be in every single shot. I used to go back after every shot and sit in the director's chair with a pair of high tech 3D glasses to check my shot. As for 3D in India, it is such a rare experience that the excitement is ten- fold."

Needless to say, the video has only heightened the expectations from the film, which is scheduled to be released early next year.
