I am above all this: Anu Malik on being upset with nephew Amaal over 'Neend Churai' remake

The senior composer had said no one took his consent, while the nephew defended saying they took permission from the original makers, Linear.

Hindi film music composer Anu Malik has been upset with his nephew and fellow composer, Amaal Malik. The senior musician was irked that neither his nephew nor any member from the Golmaal Again team took his consent before remaking the 'Neend Churai Meri' song. Anu had composed lyrics to the song for the film Ishq (1997).

However, when contacted, Anu chose to downplay the issue. He replied via text message, "What is done is done. I love and respect Rohit Shetty, too much to get into these matters. The whole world by now knows the song is composed by me so how does it matter. Also I am above all these matters. What matters is both the films Judwaa 2 and Golmaal again are bumper hits and they have songs composed by me. It's time to celebrate don't you think. The Hindi film directors and producers are now completely awakened to my songs and I am pleased as punch."

“If you want to give a twist to a song, I have no problem, but don't forget to mention the original composer's name. I wish Amaal all the best, but it will always be an Anu Malik tune. It is fine to recreate, but don't forget to credit the original composers. You should pick up the call and tell the original composer, 'this is what I am going to do.' But if you don't have the courtesy to do that, at least, give credit. Thankfully, people know who the composer is, so it is a great feeling," Anu had told Bombay Times.

Meanwhile, nephew Amaal defended his team saying they had obtained the rights from Linear, the band behind 'Sending All My Love'.

“We didn’t need to take his permission, actually. We took the rights from them. We had taken the rights of the original song ('Sending All My Love' by Linear) on which the 'Neend Churayi' tune is based. However, I’d have liked to take my uncle’s permission. That seemed like the right thing to do. We even wanted him to sing the remix. It would have been a nice, nostalgic touch. But he wouldn’t entertain my calls. So I gave up,” Amaal told DNA.

Lyricist Kumaar only retained the hook line, and created new verses for the Golmaal Again song. The Anu composition was sung by Kumar Sanu, Alka Yagnik, Kavita Krishnamurthy and Udit Narayan. The Golmaal Again track is crooned by Neeraj Sridhar and Sukriti Kakkar.
