Box office: Judwaa 2 nudges ahead of Toilet: Ek Prem Katha

The comic caper starring Varun Dhawan has bagged Rs132.25 crore nett to emerge as the highest grossing Hindi film in 2017 so far.

After a bright first week in which it bagged Rs94.95 crore nett, Judwaa 2 slowed down dramatically raising a question mark over whether it would be able to surpass Akshay Kumar’s Toilet: Ek Prem Katha as the highest grossing Hindi film of 2017 thus far.

The wait has been long, but Judwaa 2 has finally pipped Toilet: Ek Prem Katha in its fourth week. As per trade sources, the Varun Dhawan-starrer has (till 22 October) bagged Rs132.25 crore nett as against the Rs132.077 crore nett that Toilet had managed in domestic business.

Judwaa 2, however, is unlikely to remain at the top for long as Rohit Shetty’s Golmaal Again has amassed Rs87.10 crore nett in its opening weekend.

The Hindi version of Telugu film Baahubali: The Conclusion had bagged over Rs500 crore nett.

The year so far has seen two films from Shah Rukh Khan, Raees and Jab Harry Met Sejal, one from Salman Khan, Tubelight, and one from Aamir Khan, who has more than a cameo in Secret Superstar, and a couple from Akshay Kumar, Jolly LLB 2 and Toilet. But none has managed to touch the Rs150 crore nett collection mark. Judwaa 2 also looks unlikely to reach that mark.

For Varun Dhawan, however, Judwaa 2 is the highest grossing film of his career so far, though the actor would certainly hope it doesn't remain so forever.
