Disha Patani is set to hit the big stage. The actress has been signed on as the lead for the historical film, Sangamithra, directed by Sundar C. The news was shared on Twitter by Hema Rukmani of Thenandal Films, the production house.
Rukmani, CEO of Thenandal Entertainment, tweeted: 'Exclusive: Introducing @DishaPatani as Sangamithra!'
Patani replaces Shruti Haasan who earlier dropped out of the film citing 'unavoidable circumstances'.
Shruti had dropped out of the project after the film's poster was launched at the Cannes film festival earlier this year.
A spokesperson for the actress had said at the time, "Despite her enthusiasm and commitment to Sangamithra, she has had to give the film a miss since she had not received a proper bound script or a proper date calendar."

The film, a historical, is set to be directed by Sundar C, and will also star Khushboo Sundar, Jayam Ravi and Arya. The film is based on the life of the eldest daughter of the emperor Ashoka who turned to Buddhism and was among the pioneers to travel to Sri Lanka to propagate the religion.
The film will, however, focus on Sangamithra's struggle to save her father's empire. The film is billed as one of the biggest projects in Tamil cinema.
Disha Patani has already signed Baaghi 2, opposite Tiger Shroff, and is expected to begin shooting for Sangamithra soon.
