After stellar performances in Trapped, Bareilly Ki Barfi and Newton this year, Rajkummar Rao has become the undisputed toast of the town. The trailer of his next, Shaadi Mein Zaroor Aana is out and it carries some shades of Bareilly Ki Barfi.
A minute-and-a-half into the trailer, it looks like the film has little in common than just the first name of the lead actresses in Bareilly Ki Barfi and Shaadi Mein Zaroor Aana. While Bareilly Ki Barfi had Kriti Sanon, Shaadi Mein Zaroor Aana has Kriti Kharbanda.
Like the Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari film, director Ratnaa Sinhaa’s Shaadi Mein Zaroor Aana is set in a town in Uttar Pradesh, as can be gauged from the tone of Rajkummar and Kharbanda’s characters' accents.
Aarti Shukla's (Kharbanda) parents are struggling to find a suitable groom for their daughter. The search ends with Mishra (Rajkummar) and the duo hit it off instantly. Their sweet and innocent dates are reminiscent of middle class idiosyncrasies.
The pair seems to be made in heaven and a wedding date is set. Here on comes the surprise as Aarti runs away on their wedding day, leaving Mishra distraught. The couple meets again and now Mishra is hell bent on avenging his humiliation. Everything’s fair in love and war, he says. After showering love, he's out to wage war against Aarti.
Just looking at the mushy visuals and dialogues in the early part of the trailer, one can sense that there is more to Aarti than meets the eye. Why does she dump Mishra on their wedding day?
While it's a relief that Shaadi Mein Zaroor Aana is not Bareilly Ki Barfi, is this love-deceit plot really enticing? May be not.
However, with Rajkummar having a golden run and Kharbanda being a popular name down south, the film is likely to draw in the audiences. Kharbanda made an unsuccessful Hindi film debut with Raaz Reboot (2016). There is no doubt that she has potential.
Shaadi Mein Zaroor Aana will hit the theatre on 10 November.
