Why Shah Rukh Khan refused to star with Dilip Kumar, Amitabh

Filmmaker Subhash Ghai revealed that he had cast the three superstars in a war film, but Khan backed out at the last moment, as he wanted a solo lead.

Amitabh Bacahchan and Dilip Kumar are arguably two of the most decorated and idolized stars in the Hindi film industry. It would be a dream for any actor to work with the two stars. The 94-year-old Kumar has long retired, and thus, working with him will forever remain just a dream.

However, in the 1990s, Shah Rukh Khan had a golden opportunity to work with both Bachchan and Kumar in one film, but he turned the offer down.

The Raees (2017) actor has always looked upon Kumar and Bachchan as inspirational figures but the 'King Khan' backed out of the film at the eleventh hour, revealed filmmaker Subhash Ghai.

Ghai had scripted a war film, Mother Land, which the three actors had agreed to act in, in principle, but Khan backed out saying he wanted to work in a film with a solo lead.

“He (Shah Rukh Khan) felt there are so many characters in the film. He wanted to do a solo hero film then, but mine was not. It was a story of Dilip saab, Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh. On my wish list were also Aishwarya Rai, Priety Zinta and Mahima Chaudhry for the film, but that’s destiny,” Ghai told new agency, Press Trust of India.

While Mother Land wasn't made, Ghai had planned another film with Khan titled Shikhar, but, that too, got shelved and the duo then eventually worked together in Pardes (1997)

Pardes turned out to be the only film where Ghai directed Khan.
