Vijay Sethupathi's stock is on a rise since the success of Vikram Vedha (2016). The actor seems to have found his own niche in playing grey characters lurking on the edge of good and evil. In P Arumuga Kumar's Oru Nalla Naal Paathu Solren, Sethupathi returns to the genre of absurd comedy that he made his name with.
The teaser begins with the very morally ambigious, but politically volatile, question of who among Rama and Ravana are on the side of good. Sethupathi's character, dressed garishly in a demon outfit that might fit in with a mythological tele-serial, explains that while Ravana imprisoned Sita he never hurt her. On the other hand, Rama, the divine god, did suspect her and ask her to walk through fire on the basis of suspicion. Just as you begin to wonder, he replies saying "In this story, I am Rama and Ravana both."
The teaser also offers a glimpse of Gautham Kartik's young hero who plays both, the lascivious lover and the nerd, with some hilarity. Dark, humorous, and amoral, the film seems to be in the zone of the 2014 hit, Soodhu Kavvum, which established Sethupathi and Bobby Simha as stars of the new wave Tamil cinema.
The film is also a platform for youngsters like Niharika Konidela and also has music by Justin Prabhakaran.
Oru Nalla Naal Paathu Solren is set to be released in January 2018.
