Newton wins Audience Award at Festival of the Three Continents in Nantes, France


The festival celebrates cinema from the continents of Africa, Latin America and Asia.

Newton, starring Rajkummar Rao, continues to pick up accolades. This time the film, directed by Amit Masurkar, won the Prix du Public (also known as the Public Prize or Audience Award) at the 39th edition of Festival des 3 Continents (Festival of the Three Continents) held from 21 to 28 November in Nantes, France. The film, along with Anurag Kashyap's Mukkabaaz, was part of the festival's official selection.

Masurkar shared the exciting news of the film's win on Twitter.

The film, follows Rao as government clerk, Newton Kumar trying to fulfil his election duty in the conflict-ridden state of Chhattisgarh despite voter and government apathy. Just last week, Rao and the film's screenplay (by Mayank Tewaari and Amit Masurkar) were honoured at Asia Pacific Screen Awards in Brisbane, Australia.

Newton is also India's entry to the Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film. Its Oscar campaign in Los Angeles has been going steady. 

The film had a spectacular Hollywood premiere at the 31st American Film Institute (AFI) Fest on 15 November under the world cinema section. It was the only Indian film to screen at the festival.
