Ronnie Screwvala’s upcoming production, Love Per Square Foot, starring Vicky Kaushal and Angira Dhar, is on its ways to become the first mainstream Indian film to directly have a streaming release, with Netflix.
Love Per Square Foot will tell the story of Kaushal and Dhar, two prospective real estate buyers who pretend to be a couple in order to purchase a flat in Mumbai. Theatre and film actor Anand Tiwari makes his directorial debut with this project. Earlier, he assisted Anurag Basu on Barfi! (2012).
Artistes Ratna Pathak Shah, Supriya Pathak and Raghuvir Yadav are also part of the film.
In 2016, Netflix, with around 104 million subscribers, bought the rights to stream Bengali filmmaker Q’s Brahman Naman worldwide. Other Indian indies, like Pan Nalin’s Angry Indian Goddesses (2015), have found an international audience on the platform.
The global streaming service has also invested in several Indian original series, beginning with the Sacred Games starring Saif Ali Khan, Selection Day, Again and the recently announced Bard of Blood, co-produced by Shah Rukh Khan.
Screwvala, the former head of UTV Pictures, is back to producing with a number of projects including, Karwaan starring Irrfan Khan, Dulquer Salmaan and Mithila Palkar, Mard Ko Dard Nahin Hota introducing Bhagyashree’s son Abhimanyu Dassani and a film on the Uri attacks in 2016, also starring Vicky Kaushal.
