Tik Tik Tik trailer: Gravity meets Armaggeddon in this Jayam Ravi space heist

Directed by Shakti Soundar Rajan, this is being pitched as India's first space film.

Hindi cinema has been pipped in the space race by the Tamil film industry. While Sushant Singh Rajput is still preparing for his trip to the moon in Chanda Mama Door Ke, Jayam Ravi seems to have to broken through the mesosphere in Shakti Soundar Rajan's Tik Tik Tik.

The film's trailer, which was released today, peers into an armageddon event that is foiled by an Indian team of space cadets and a wily criminal.

The trailer begins with a flaming 8 square-foot rock crash-landing in Chennai. The rock is simply a small piece of a 60 square-kilometre asteroid heading for the country. 'It will change the topography of India', says the chairman of the space mission.

Like in every Hollywood film made by Michael Bay, the plan is to blow the asteroid to pieces. Except for one problem. The International Space Organization refuses to allow India access to the missile capable of doing that.

The Indian space mission has a solution though. Enter Jayam Ravi, who plays a magician capable of unlocking any trap, breaking out of any prison (do not ask how he is in prison). He joins the team tasked with breaking into the space station and stealing the missile.

While a space film allows leeway for VFX, stunts, and some improbable scientific loopholes, it also poses a challenge. From exploding spaceships in space, asteroids, nuclear missiles, and even a landing on the moon, there are some astounding plot points that just might make this an Indian Armageddon (1998).

The trailer captures some of the outrageous and stunning stunt visuals that might get bums on theatre seats. The sight of a roped Jayam Ravi floating in space, outside his destroyed spaceship, while the asteroid looms over the earth's horizon is impressive.

The film is set to be released on 15 August 2018.
