First-time director Suresh Triveni’s Tumhari Sulu, starring Vidya Balan and Manav Kaul, opened with Rs2.50-2.75 crore at the box office.
This year has seen a number of light-hearted small budget films achieving success at the box office. Hindi Medium, Bareilly Ki Barfi and Shubh Mangal Saavdhan are three names that spring to mind. These films didn’t have impressive openings, but good reviews and positive word-of-mouth publicity turned them into surprise hits.
The opening of Tumhari Sulu has been better than the opening these three films got. The film has also received good reviews and word-of-mouth publicity. This may work in the film's favour today and tomorow.
Tumhari Sulu has reportedly been made at a budget of Rs12 crore. This is another reason why it has a good chance of quickly becoming a safe bet for the producers.

Yesterday also saw Prem Prakash Modi’s Panchlait hitting the theatres. Due to almost zero visibility and awareness, the film has been washed out.
Hollywood film Justice League, which was also released yesterday, recorded impressive collections despite the fact that a Hindi version was not released.
