Actor-filmmaker Kamal Haasan has donated Rs20 lakh to the Tamil chair at the Harvard university in the United States.
The actor handed over a cheque for the sum to well-known Tamil enthusiast professor Gnanasambandan yesterday.
Speaking on the occasion, the professor said, "A year ago, Kamal Haasan had urged Tamils all over the world to contribute to the Tamil chair at Harvard. Today, he said it won't be enough if I contribute with words alone. I will also have to contribute in cash."
The Tamil Nadu government had contributed Rs10 crore to create a Tamil chair at the famous university in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Actor Vishal, who is president of the Tamil Film Producers Council and secretary of the South Indian Artistes Association, recently contributed Rs10 lakh. Music composer AR Rahman, too, had made a contribution to the Tamil chair during his Canada concert.
The purpose of the chair is multifold. It will enable Tamil to be taught at Harvard, one of the world’s more prestigious universities. It will also enable research in ancient classical Tamil literature. Harvard will produce Tamil scholars trained in research methodologies.
Arumugham Murugaiya from London, Caldwell Velnambi from the US and writer Suga were among those present when Kamal Haasan presented the cheque to Gnanasambandan.
