With Rohit Shetty’s Golmaal Again reaching the Rs200 crore mark, it becomes the first film to achieve this feat this year. However, not many would know that this is also the first time that a film starring Devgn has crossed the double century.
Devgn has been one of the most prominent stars of mainstream Hindi cinema. So, it does come as a surprise that none of his earlier films had even crossed Rs140 crore.
Before Golmaal Again, the fourth film in the Golmaal series, Devgn’s highest score was Rs140 crore with Singham Returns (2014), which was also helmed by Shetty.
It was the second film in the series after the success of Singham in 2011. Singham Returns managed to be a superhit despite the fact that it wasn’t as acclaimed as Singham.
The actor was in need of a hit as his last few films hadn’t clicked at the box office. After Singham Returns, he starred in Prabhu Deva’s Action Jackson (2014), which didn't perform well commercially. His thriller drama Drishyam (2015) earned on the average at the ticket window and recieved good reviews.
Although his own directorial venture Shivaay (2016) earned Rs84.83 crore, the film suffered due to a huge budget. His other release this year, Baadshaho also didn’t work at the box office and closed shop with only Rs65 crore.
