Box office: Thor Ragnarok overpowers Ittefaq in first week

The Hollywood superhero film bagged Rs40 crore nett, while Ittefaq had a low first week collection of Rs21.5 crore nett.

Hollywood films have given tough competion to Hindi film releases in the past few years. Last week’s Hindi release Ittefaq struggled to compete with Hollywood release, Thor Ragnarok. The Dharma Productions film had an average first week, collecting Rs21.50 crore nett, as opposed to the Hollywood film which made Rs40 crore nett, as reported by BoxOfficeIndia.com.

Ittefaq, starring Sonakshi Sinha, Sidharth Malhotra and Akshaye Khanna, has been made at an estimated budget of Rs15 crore and got a limited release.

“The (estimated) budget of the film, including prints & advertisements, was not more than Rs15 crore. The makers have adopted a similar strategy to a film like Dear Zindagi (2016) which had a limited release too. Ittefaq was released in around 700-750 screens initially, and I believe, it has now increased to about 800-850 screens now. Thor has better collection, but it has also been released across 1,200-1,350 screens in India,” said film exhibitor Akshaye Rathi.

Thor Ragnarok's week one collections, however, lag behind other Hollywood films released this year. These include Fast & Furious 8 (Rs62 crore nett) and Spiderman: Homecoming (Rs43 crore nett).

Meanwhile, the big Diwali releases Golmaal Again and Secret Superstar continued to make marginal progress in their third week in the theatres. Rohit Shetty’s Golmaal Again has so far earned Rs197.40 crore nett, while Secret Superstar crawled to Rs60.25 crore nett.
