Konkona Sensharma has been named Best Director for her film, A Death In The Gunj, and Best Actress for her performance in Lipstick Under My Burkha at the New York Indian Film Festival.

Sensharma, 37, won the award for her directorial debut starring Vikrant Massey, Ranvir Shorey, Kalki Koechlin and Jim Sarbh.

The actress also won the Best actress award for her performance in Alankrita Shrivastava's feminist drama, Lipstick Under My Burkha. The award is one of the many international awards that Shrivastava's film has picked up on the international circuit.

The director was, quite obviously, pleased at the news and tweeted her joy. She wrote 'Yay! @konkonas wins best actress at @nyindianff for @lipstickmovie💃💃💃#lipstickundermyburkha'

Another big win at the event was for Subhashish Bhutiani's Mukti Bhawan. The film about the struggles of a middle-aged man trying to carry out his father's wishes won the Best Film award at the festival. Actor Adil Hussain picked up the trophy on the film's behalf.

The Malayalam crime drama, Kammatipadam, won the Best Screenplay, while K Kaladharan won the award for Best Actor for his performance in Ottayaal n Paatha (A Narrow Path).

Presented by the Indo-American Arts Council, the festival took place between 30 April and concluded on 7 May.
